About Eleftherias Square

Heraklion's biggest square looks like pure cafe life, but it sits on a Venetian parade ground, with siege cisterns below and the Minoan world in the museum across it.

Eleftherias (Freedom) Square is the largest square in Heraklion and the main gathering point of the modern city, set at the eastern edge of the old town beside the Venetian Gate of St George. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum, home to the world's foremost collection of Minoan art, stands on the eastern side of the square, while the former Prefecture building, now offices of the Region of Crete, occupies the southwest corner.

In the Venetian period the open ground served as a military parade and training field known as the Campo Marzio. The corner barracks developed from a structure of 1585; new barracks begun in 1883 under the architect Athanasios Moussis reused architectural elements taken from Knossos, and their marble main doorway came from the Monastery of St Francis, which once stood where the museum now stands. Beneath the square the Venetians maintained granaries and water cisterns for use in emergencies.

Did you know? When new barracks rose on the square in the 1880s, their builders reused carved architectural elements lifted straight from the Minoan palace at Knossos, recycling Bronze Age stone into a nineteenth-century army building.
