About Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum
Glasgow's beloved red sandstone museum and art gallery, home to Salvador Dalí's masterpiece "Christ of St John of the Cross," a Spitfire suspended from the ceiling, and free admission to 8,000 extraordinary objects.
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is one of Scotland's most visited attractions, a magnificent Spanish Baroque-style building completed in 1901 and constructed from deep red Dumfriesshire sandstone. Housing over 8,000 objects across 22 themed galleries, it holds one of Europe's great civic collections. The highlight for many is Salvador Dalí's "Christ of St John of the Cross," purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1952 for £8,200, a sum considered outrageous at the time but now regarded as one of the great art bargains of the 20th century. A Supermarine Spitfire LA198 hangs dramatically from the ceiling of the West Court. The museum spans art, natural history, Egyptian antiquities, arms and armour, and Scottish history. It reopened in 2006 after a three-year refurbishment and remains entirely free to enter, welcoming over a million visitors each year.
