About Glasgow Necropolis
A magnificent Victorian garden cemetery perched on a hill behind Glasgow Cathedral, containing over 50,000 burials beneath extraordinary Gothic monuments, with panoramic views across the city.
The Glasgow Necropolis is a Victorian garden cemetery opened in 1833, modelled on the famous Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris and conceived as a picturesque landscape of mourning and civic pride. Situated on a prominent hill to the east of Glasgow Cathedral, it contains the graves of some 50,000 people beneath over 3,500 monuments of extraordinary ambition and artistry. The cemetery was developed by the Merchants House of Glasgow, and its early subscribers were drawn from the city's merchant and professional class. At the summit stands a statue of the Protestant reformer John Knox, erected in 1825, which predates the cemetery itself. The monuments span from grandiose Greek Revival mausoleums to slender Gothic obelisks and Baroque carved angels. The Necropolis offers superb panoramic views across Glasgow and is a remarkable open-air museum of 19th-century funerary art and architecture, freely accessible to all.
Did you know? The Necropolis was modelled on the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris, at the time of opening in 1833, Glasgow merchants competed fiercely to purchase the most prestigious and elaborate burial plots.
