About Glasgow Cathedral

A magnificent medieval Gothic cathedral built from 1136, one of the few Scottish churches to survive the Reformation intact, with the tomb of Glasgow's patron saint Mungo in its atmospheric crypt.

Glasgow Cathedral, formally the Cathedral Church of Saint Mungo, is the oldest building in Glasgow and one of the finest examples of Scottish Gothic architecture. Construction began around 1136 on the site where Saint Kentigern, known as Mungo, founded a church in the 6th century. The cathedral's crypt, housing the tomb of Saint Mungo, is considered one of the great achievements of medieval architecture in Scotland. Unlike many Scottish churches, it survived the Reformation of the 16th century largely intact, saved by the trade guilds of Glasgow who formed a human chain against the iconoclasts. The building features the Blackadder Aisle, the Chapter House, and a breathtaking nave with soaring pillars. Free to enter, it remains an active Church of Scotland place of worship and receives hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, standing as a testament to Glasgow's ancient ecclesiastical heritage.

Did you know? Glasgow Cathedral is one of the very few Scottish mainland churches to survive the Protestant Reformation intact, saved by the trade guilds who formed a human chain to protect it from iconoclasts in the 16th century.
