About The Burrell Collection

One of the great private art collections of the 20th century, donated to Glasgow by shipping magnate Sir William Burrell and displayed in a purpose-built gallery in the beautiful Pollok Country Park.

The Burrell Collection is one of the most remarkable personal art collections ever assembled, donated to the City of Glasgow in 1944 by the shipping magnate Sir William Burrell (1861–1958). Burrell spent nearly his entire lifetime collecting, amassing over 9,000 objects spanning ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; Islamic carpets and ceramics; Chinese bronzes and porcelain; medieval European tapestries and stained glass; and a distinguished collection of paintings including works by Degas, Cézanne, Bellini, and Rembrandt. The collection is displayed in a beautiful timber-and-glass building set in Pollok Country Park in the south of the city, which opened in 1983 and was extensively renovated and reopened in 2022. The park itself is the largest urban park in Europe and home to Pollok House, a superb Georgian mansion containing a collection of Spanish paintings. Admission to the Burrell is free.

Did you know? Sir William Burrell donated over 9,000 objects to Glasgow in 1944, but stipulated the collection must be housed more than 16 miles from the city centre to protect the artworks from industrial air pollution.
