About Riverside Museum
Glasgow's spectacular transport museum on the River Clyde, housed in Zaha Hadid's award-winning zigzag building and home to vintage trams, locomotives, and the tall ship Glenlee moored outside.
The Riverside Museum is Glasgow's award-winning transport museum, opened in 2011 on the north bank of the River Clyde at Pointhouse Quay. The building itself is a remarkable architectural achievement, designed by the late Zaha Hadid and her firm Zaha Hadid Architects, its distinctive zigzag zinc roof is one of Britain's most acclaimed modern designs, and in 2013 the museum won the European Museum of the Year Award. Inside, over 3,000 objects tell the story of transport from ancient times to the present, with particular emphasis on Glasgow's extraordinary contribution to shipbuilding, engineering, and innovation. Highlights include a collection of vintage trams, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles, as well as recreated street scenes from early 20th-century Glasgow. Moored outside is the SV Glenlee, a tall sailing ship built on the Clyde in 1896, now managed by the Clyde Maritime Trust. Admission to the museum is free.
Did you know? At the height of Glasgow's shipbuilding era in the early 1900s, the Clyde's yards launched around a fifth of all the world's new ships, and nearly half of Britain's, an astonishing concentration of industrial output.
