About The Tenement House
A perfectly preserved Edwardian tenement flat at 145 Buccleuch Street, untouched since 1911 when Miss Agnes Toward moved in, an extraordinary time capsule of Glasgow working-class life, now managed by the National Trust for Scotland.
The Tenement House is one of the most extraordinary domestic time capsules in Britain. Located at 145 Buccleuch Street in the Garnethill area of Glasgow, it is a first-floor flat in a typical late-Victorian tenement building, occupied by Miss Agnes Toward from 1911 until 1965, a remarkable fifty-four years during which she changed almost nothing. Agnes was a shorthand typist who lived a quiet, ordered life, and when she was taken into hospital in 1965, the flat she left behind was essentially an Edwardian home with its original range, box bed, and fittings intact. A neighbour, Anna Davidson, recognised the historical value of what Agnes had preserved, and the property was eventually acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1982. The ground-floor flat serves as an exhibition about tenement life in Glasgow, while the upper flat remains as Agnes left it, a haunting, intimate portrait of a life lived in a specific time and place.
Did you know? Agnes Toward lived in the flat from 1911 to 1965, 54 years, without installing electricity in the early years, central heating, or a telephone, keeping the flat as an authentic Edwardian time capsule.
