About University of Glasgow

Founded in 1451, Scotland's second-oldest university with stunning Gothic Revival architecture, beautiful cloisters, and the Hunterian, Scotland's oldest public museum, set on a hill above Kelvingrove Park.

The University of Glasgow is one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, founded by papal bull of Pope Nicholas V in 1451. It is Scotland's second-oldest university after St Andrews. The university's current campus on Gilmorehill was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Gothic Revival style, with the main building completed in 1870, one of the finest examples of Victorian Gothic architecture in Britain. The soaring tower is visible from much of the West End. The cloisters and quadrangles of the campus are among the most atmospheric spaces in Glasgow. The university is home to the Hunterian, Scotland's oldest public museum, founded in 1807 and housing the collection of the anatomist William Hunter, including major holdings of Roman coins, fossils, paintings by Rembrandt and Whistler, and Charles Rennie Mackintosh interiors. Figures associated with the university include Adam Smith, Lord Kelvin, and James Watt.

Did you know? The University of Glasgow was founded in 1451, making it older than many European nation-states, and those who studied or worked here include Adam Smith (father of economics), Lord Kelvin (who devised the absolute temperature scale), and James Watt (steam-engine pioneer).
