About The Lighthouse
Mackintosh's first public building (1895), designed as the Glasgow Herald newspaper offices and now Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture, with a rooftop viewing tower offering panoramic city views.
The Lighthouse is a landmark building in Glasgow's Mitchell Street, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh in 1895 as the new offices of The Glasgow Herald newspaper, it was his first public commission. The building's most distinctive feature is the cylindrical water tower, which gave the building its current name, The Lighthouse. Closed as a newspaper office in the 1980s, the building was transformed for Glasgow's role as City of Architecture and Design in 1999 into Scotland's Centre for Design and Architecture. Today it houses changing exhibitions on architecture, design, and the built environment, as well as a permanent Mackintosh Interpretation Centre. A spiral staircase inside the tower leads to a rooftop viewing platform, the Mackintosh Tower, from which there are spectacular 360-degree views over Glasgow city centre. Admission to the viewing platform is modest; gallery admission is free.
Did you know? The Lighthouse was Mackintosh's very first public commission, completed in 1895 when he was just 27, a full decade before the Glasgow School of Art building that made him internationally famous.
