About Sharmanka Kinetic Gallery

A unique mechanical theatre by Russian sculptor Eduard Bersudsky, extraordinary kinetic sculptures of carved figures and salvaged objects that perform elaborate routines to haunting music, one of Glasgow's most magical hidden gems.

Sharmanka Kinetic Gallery is one of the most extraordinary and unexpected cultural experiences in Scotland, a unique mechanical theatre created by Russian sculptor Eduard Bersudsky and theatre director Tatyana Jakovskaya. Bersudsky, born in Leningrad in 1939, spent decades creating intricate kinetic sculptures from salvaged wood, metal, and other reclaimed materials. His figures, strange, expressive carved people and animals, are connected by gears, wheels, and wires to create extraordinary mechanical performances. Bersudsky and Jakovskaya left Russia for Glasgow in 1996, and the gallery has been operating in the city ever since, currently housed at Trongate 103 in the Merchant City. Performances take place to haunting music and dramatic lighting, creating a theatrical experience unlike anything else in Britain. The shows run for about an hour and are suitable for adults and older children. Advance booking is strongly recommended.

Did you know? Eduard Bersudsky creates his kinetic sculptures entirely from salvaged and reclaimed materials, old clocks, bicycle parts, scrap metal, transforming rubbish into art of extraordinary complexity and emotional power.
