About Buchanan Street

Glasgow's premier pedestrianised shopping street, part of the famous "Style Mile", running from Royal Exchange Square to Buchanan Galleries, lined with buskers, flagship stores, and a vibrant street life.

Buchanan Street is Glasgow's most prestigious shopping street, forming the heart of the city's famous "Style Mile", a marketing concept that encompasses Buchanan Street, Sauchiehall Street, and Argyle Street as a connected shopping district. Pedestrianised in 1978, Buchanan Street runs from Royal Exchange Square in the south, home to the Gallery of Modern Art and the Duke of Wellington statue, through the heart of the city centre to the Buchanan Galleries shopping centre in the north, with the St Enoch Centre nearby to the south. The street is lined with major retailers and flagship stores, but it is also famous for its street performers and buskers, who add considerable life and energy to what might otherwise be a generic retail environment. The Royal Concert Hall sits at the northern end of the street, and the Glasgow underground (the Subway) has stops at both ends.

Did you know? Buchanan Street was pedestrianised in 1978, a decision that transformed it from a busy traffic route into one of the busiest and most beloved shopping streets in Scotland.
