About Mariacka Street

Gdańsk's loveliest lane: a short cobbled run between St Mary's and the river, lined with raised stone terraces, gargoyle rain-spouts and a glowing parade of Baltic amber shops.

Mariacka Street (ulica Mariacka), known in German as Frauengasse, is widely regarded as the most charming street in Gdańsk. About 185 metres long, it runs from St Mary's Basilica down to the Mariacka Gate on the Motława, which is recorded as early as 1484. It is lined with przedproża, raised stone terraces in front of the houses, which arose because medieval Gdańsk stood on low, damp ground and doors were built above street level.

The terraces carry ornate stone gargoyle rain-spouts, known locally as rzygacze ('spewers'), carved as mythical and heraldic beasts. The street is nicknamed the Amber Street for its many amber jewellery galleries and workshops. Badly damaged in the Second World War, it was, unusually, rebuilt largely from salvaged historic material recovered from the neighbourhood.

Did you know? The street's raised stone terraces, called przedproża, exist because medieval Gdańsk stood on low, marshy ground, so merchants lifted their front doors above the street and edged them with carved balustrades and benches.
