St Mary's Church (Bazylika Mariacka), a Brick Gothic co-cathedral, is one of the largest brick churches in the world. Ground was broken in 1343 and the main construction ran from 1379 to 1502. It is about 105.5 metres long and 66 metres wide across the transept, with an interior said to hold over 25,000 people. Wikipedia ranks it among the three largest brick churches ever built, with San Petronio in Bologna and the Frauenkirche in Munich, so the flat claim to be 'the largest' is disputed.
From the 16th century until 1945 it was a Protestant church, reputedly the second-largest Lutheran church in the world, before returning to Catholic use; Pope Paul VI made it a minor basilica in 1965. It holds a medieval astronomical clock built in 1464–1470 by Hans Düringer. Its tower, about 78 metres high, is reached by roughly 405 steps. Memling's 'Last Judgment' once hung here and is now in the National Museum of Gdańsk.
