About Artus Court

The grandest of northern Europe's merchant halls named for King Arthur: a soaring vaulted chamber on the Long Market, hung with model ships and holding an 11-metre Renaissance tiled stove.

Artus Court (Dwór Artusa), on the Long Market behind Neptune's Fountain, was a meeting hall and social centre for the city's merchants, named after the legendary King Arthur. It was built in 1348–1350 and first recorded by name in 1357. Its ornate façade was reworked in 1617 by Abraham van den Blocke, and its single great hall is covered by ribbed vaulting and hung with ships, paintings and guild insignia.

Inside stands a Renaissance tiled stove about 11 metres high, made in 1545–1546 by Georg Stelzner and covered with roughly 520 tiles; popularly called one of the tallest in Europe, though that superlative is not firmly sourced. The Polish flag was raised on the building on 28 March 1945. Damaged in the fighting of that year, it was rebuilt and is now a branch of the Museum of Gdańsk.

Did you know? Artus Court is named after King Arthur. Across medieval northern Europe, merchant brotherhoods built halls named for the legendary king as clubs for trade and feasting; this is the finest survivor.
