About Green Gate
A palatial Flemish-Mannerist gate of the 1560s closing the Long Market at the river, built as a royal lodging no king ever used, and now home to a museum and Lech Wałęsa's office.
The Green Gate (Zielona Brama) closes the eastern, riverside end of the Long Market, standing directly on the Motława. Built in 1564–1568 to designs by Regnier van Amsterdam and Hans Kramer of Dresden, it is one of the earliest examples of Dutch Mannerism in Gdańsk, inspired by the town hall of Antwerp and built of imported Dutch brick. It stands on the site of the earlier Gothic Cog Gate.
It was intended as a formal residence for visiting Polish monarchs, with a grand first-floor hall of about 300 m² for feasts and performances, but no king is recorded to have actually stayed there. Today it houses a branch of the National Museum in Gdańsk, and former president Lech Wałęsa keeps an office in the building.
Did you know? The Green Gate was built as a grand lodging for visiting Polish kings, with a 300-square-metre ceremonial hall. Yet as far as the records show, no monarch ever actually stayed the night there.
