About European Solidarity Centre
A rust-clad museum on the old shipyard, shaped like a ship's hull, telling how a 1980 strike gave birth to Solidarity, the free trade union that helped bring down communism across Europe.
The European Solidarity Centre (Europejskie Centrum Solidarności) opened on 31 August 2014, the anniversary of the 1980 Gdańsk Agreement, on Plac Solidarności beside the historic Gdańsk Shipyard. It commemorates Solidarity and the anti-communist opposition movements of Eastern Europe. Designed by the FORT studio, winner of a 2007 competition, its rusted Corten-steel walls are meant to evoke the hulls of ships built at the neighbouring yard.
Its permanent exhibition holds around 2,000 exhibits, and its library and archive some 100,000 books and documents. It was built from 2010 at a cost of 229 million złoty, including about 113 million złoty (38.4 million euro) of EU funding. It stands beside Gate No. 2 of the shipyard and the Monument to the Fallen Shipyard Workers, and Lech Wałęsa keeps an office in the building.
Did you know? The centre's walls are clad in weathering Corten steel, meant to look like the hull of a ship under construction, a tribute to the Gdańsk Shipyard workers whose 1980 strike gave birth to Solidarity.
