About Pearse Station

The oldest commuter railway station in Ireland, opened in 1834 as Dublin and Kingstown Railway's Westland Row, now named after Patrick Pearse, executed leader of the 1916 Easter Rising.

Pearse Station on Westland Row is Ireland's oldest railway station, originally opened in December 1834 as the terminus of the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, the first railway in Ireland and one of the earliest suburban passenger railways in the world. The line ran from Westland Row to Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) along the coast, a journey of about six miles.

The original station building still stands and is a listed structure. The station was renamed Pearse Station in 1966 to honour Patrick Pearse, the schoolteacher and poet who led the 1916 Easter Rising and was executed by the British in the aftermath. The name change was part of the nationwide commemoration of the Rising's fiftieth anniversary.

Today Pearse Station is a key hub on the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART) coastal line and the commuter rail network, one of the busiest stations in Ireland. It is also notable as the closest station to Trinity College, the National Gallery, the National Museum, and Merrion Square, making it the gateway to the heart of Georgian Dublin.
