About Leinster House

The seat of the Irish Parliament since 1922, a 1745 ducal townhouse that is said to have inspired the design of the White House in Washington, D.C.

Leinster House on Kildare Street in the heart of Georgian Dublin has been the seat of the Irish Parliament, the Oireachtas, consisting of Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann, since 1922. It is one of the most historically important buildings in Ireland.

The house was built in 1745 for James FitzGerald, the 20th Earl of Kildare and later the first Duke of Leinster, by the architect Richard Castle. It was the largest private house in Dublin at the time of its construction, and its construction south of the Liffey helped shift the centre of gravity of fashionable Dublin away from the north side.

The connection to the White House in Washington is well-established: James Hoban, the Irish-born architect who won the competition to design the White House in 1792, had worked in Ireland and is believed to have drawn on the design of Leinster House for the American executive residence. The similarities in scale and proportion are clear.

After the death of the last Duke of Leinster, the house passed through various hands before being purchased by the Royal Dublin Society. The Free State government purchased it in 1922 and it has served as the home of Irish democracy ever since.

Did you know? Leinster House is believed to have inspired the design of the White House in Washington D.C., the Irish architect James Hoban, who designed the White House in 1792, is thought to have modelled it on the Dublin townhouse.
