About Bram Stoker's Dublin

The Dublin world of Dracula's creator, Bram Stoker was born in Clontarf in 1847 and spent his formative years in Dublin, drawing on St Michan's mummies, Marsh's Library, and the Gothic city for his masterpiece.

Bram Stoker, the creator of Dracula (1897), was born in Clontarf, Dublin, on 8 November 1847. He grew up in Dublin, studied at Trinity College, and worked as a civil servant in Dublin Castle before moving to London to manage the Lyceum Theatre for the actor Henry Irving.

Dublin has several significant locations associated with Stoker and his creation of Dracula. St Michan's Church in Smithfield has vaults containing naturally mummified bodies, preserved by the dry limestone atmosphere, which Stoker reportedly visited and which may have inspired the undead imagery of Dracula. Marsh's Library, where readers were locked in wire cages with rare books, has similarly Gothic overtones. The Oscar Wilde Building of Trinity College was Stoker's alma mater.

The Bram Stoker Festival is held in Dublin every October, a four-day festival of gothic entertainment, literature, and performance that celebrates Stoker's legacy and explores Dublin's gothic heritage. The festival is based around the atmospheric streets and buildings of the north inner city, drawing on the darkness that Stoker himself would have known.

Did you know? Bram Stoker and Oscar Wilde were both Trinity College Dublin graduates who competed for the same woman, Florence Balcombe, Stoker won her hand in 1878, and she remained his wife until his death in 1912.
