About Custom House

James Gandon's 1791 masterpiece, considered the finest neoclassical building in Dublin, bombed and gutted by the IRA in 1921, meticulously restored, now home to the Department of Housing.

The Custom House on the north bank of the Liffey, just east of O'Connell Bridge, is James Gandon's masterpiece and widely considered the finest neoclassical building in Ireland. Completed in 1791, it is a long, symmetrical composition in Portland stone with a central dome, Doric colonnades, and a facade decorated with carved river gods representing the rivers of Ireland. The building's scale and refinement were remarkable achievements for their time.

In May 1921, during the War of Independence, the Dublin Brigade of the IRA seized and burned the Custom House, destroying its interior and gutting the building. The fire burned for five days. The intention was to disrupt the British administration of Ireland by destroying its administrative records.

After independence the Custom House was meticulously restored, a process that took years and considerable resources. The exterior was largely preserved and the dome rebuilt. The building today houses several government departments and is still one of the most beautiful views in Dublin, particularly in evening light when its pale Portland stone reflects the setting sun and the Liffey.

Did you know? The Custom House was burned by the IRA in May 1921, and the fire burned for five days, but the IRA operation was costly: five volunteers killed and about 80 captured while the building was ablaze.
