About Four Courts
James Gandon's 1796 masterpiece on the Liffey, Ireland's principal law courts, their magnificent dome a defining feature of the Dublin skyline, site of the opening bombardment of the 1922 Irish Civil War.
The Four Courts on the north bank of the Liffey is one of the great buildings of Georgian Dublin, a magnificent neoclassical composition designed by James Gandon and completed in 1796. At its centre rises a great drum and dome modelled on the Pantheon in Rome, flanked by two wings containing the four original courts, Chancery, King's Bench, Exchequer, and Common Pleas. The building has been Ireland's principal courts complex for over two centuries.
The Four Courts has a dual significance in Irish history. In April 1922, anti-Treaty republican forces occupied the building in defiance of the Provisional Government. In June of that year, the Provisional Government, under pressure from Britain, shelled the Four Courts with borrowed artillery. The ensuing fire destroyed the Public Record Office, housed in a wing of the building, burning irreplaceable archives dating back centuries. The destruction of those records was one of the greatest cultural losses in Irish history.
The building was restored after the Civil War and the dome today looks much as Gandon intended. It remains an active courts complex.
Did you know? The bombardment of the Four Courts in June 1922 destroyed the Public Record Office and seven centuries of Irish documentary history, the loss of those archives is considered one of the greatest cultural catastrophes in Irish history.
