About Sinagoga de Córdoba

The Sinagoga de Córdoba is a small 14th-century synagogue tucked into an alley in the Judería, one of only three medieval synagogues surviving in Spain (the others are in Toledo). The building is tiny, the main prayer hall measures approximately 7 by 6 metres, but its walls are covered with exquisite Mudéjar stucco decoration featuring interlaced geometric patterns, plant motifs, and Hebrew inscriptions from the Psalms. The synagogue was built around 1315 and was in use for less than 180 years before the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. It subsequently served as a rabies hospital and then a small chapel, which preserved it from demolition. It was recognised as a synagogue again only in 1884.
