About Medina Azahara

The vast ruined palace-city of the Umayyad Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, built from scratch in 936 AD on a hillside 8km from Córdoba, abandoned and plundered 70 years later, and now one of the most important and evocative archaeological sites in Spain.

Medina Azahara, 'Shining City' in Arabic, was the extraordinary palace-city built by Abd al-Rahman III, the first Caliph of Córdoba, beginning in 936. It was a complete urban complex covering 112 hectares on three terraced levels on a hillside west of Córdoba: on the upper level, the royal palace and administrative buildings; on the middle level, gardens and official spaces; on the lower level, the city for officials, soldiers, and artisans. The site was destroyed in 1009-1010 during a civil war, plundered for building materials for centuries, and its very location was forgotten for nearly 900 years. Major excavations began in 1910, and the site is now one of the most extensive archaeological excavations in Spain, still less than half uncovered. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018.

Did you know? Contemporary Arab historians recorded that the construction of Medina Azahara consumed one-third of the entire annual revenue of the Córdoba Caliphate, and the Caliphate's annual revenue was the largest in the western world. Abd al-Rahman III reportedly employed 10,000 workers, 1,500 mules, and 400 camels daily on the construction site.
