About Jewish Quarter (Judería)

The medieval Jewish quarter of Córdoba, a labyrinth of whitewashed alleys surrounding the only surviving medieval synagogue in Andalusia, where Jewish scholars and philosophers including Maimonides lived and worked during the city's 10th-century golden age.

The Judería is the historic Jewish quarter of Córdoba, a network of narrow whitewashed streets occupying a small area immediately west of the Mezquita. During the Umayyad Caliphate (929-1031), Córdoba was one of the great centres of Jewish intellectual life in the world, home to scholars, physicians, poets, and philosophers including Moses Maimonides (born here in 1138). The quarter's most important monument is the Sinagoga de Córdoba, a small but beautifully decorated 14th-century synagogue that is one of only three medieval synagogues surviving in Spain. The neighbourhood is also famous for its flower-filled patios and the Calleja de las Flores, one of the most photographed streets in Andalusia.

Did you know? Córdoba in the 10th century was the largest city in Western Europe, with a population estimated at between 500,000 and 1 million people, larger than Constantinople, Paris, and London combined. The Umayyad Caliphate's capital city had street lighting, running water, and public baths centuries before any northern European city.
