About Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos
The 14th-century palace-fortress of the Christian kings of Córdoba, a compact castle with towers, Roman mosaic halls, beautiful Arab-style terraced gardens, and a long history as a royal residence, Inquisition headquarters, and military prison.
The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos is the palace-fortress built by Alfonso XI of Castile in 1328 on the site of earlier Moorish fortifications. It served as a royal residence for the Kings of Castile and was the base from which Fernando and Isabella launched the final phase of the Reconquista against Granada. The Alcázar subsequently became the headquarters of the Córdoba Inquisition and then a military prison, functions it retained until 1931. Today visitors can see the medieval towers, halls with fine Roman mosaics (including a large 3rd-century mosaic of a polychrome tableau), and the beautiful terraced gardens with fountains and fishponds in Arab style.
Did you know? Christopher Columbus made several presentations to the court of Fernando and Isabella during the years the monarchs spent in Córdoba, beginning with his first audience at the Alcázar in 1486. A royal commission led by Hernando de Talavera reviewed his proposal and reported against it around 1490, because it correctly calculated that his estimate of the distance to Asia by sailing west was far too small, Columbus was wrong about the distances, but his gamble paid off because America was in the way.
