The Museo Arqueológico de Córdoba is the main archaeological museum of the city, housed in the 16th-century Palacio de los Páez de Castillejo and its modern extension. The museum contains extensive collections covering all the major periods of Córdoba's history: Roman, Visigothic, Moorish, and medieval. Among the most important exhibits are a large collection of Roman sculpture, mosaics, and domestic objects from Colonia Patricia Corduba; Visigothic architectural fragments and jewellery; and an exceptional collection of Umayyad objects from the Caliphate period including bronze animal figures, carved ivory boxes, and decorative ceramics. The museum building itself was constructed on the site of a Roman theatre, and the remains of the theatre are visible through glass floors and in an underground section.
