About Torre de la Calahorra

The 14th-century fortified tower guarding the south end of the Roman Bridge, now home to the Museo Vivo de Al-Ándalus, which uses dioramas and interactive displays to bring to life the multicultural golden age of Moorish Córdoba.

The Torre de la Calahorra is a fortified tower at the southern end of the Puente Romano: Almohad in origin, it was rebuilt and extended in 1369 by Henry II of Castile to defend the bridge approach from the south bank. The tower houses the Museo Vivo de Al-Ándalus, a museum that uses dioramas, scale models, and audiovisual displays to reconstruct the cosmopolitan culture of the Córdoba Caliphate in the 10th century. Exhibits focus on the coexistence of Muslim, Jewish, and Christian scholars in Córdoba, and include reconstructions of the city at the height of the Caliphate, scenes from the court of Abd al-Rahman III, and the scientific achievements of Andalusian scholars.

Did you know? The term 'convivencia', coexistence, used to describe the relationship between Muslims, Jews, and Christians in medieval Andalusia was coined by the Spanish historian Américo Castro in the 1940s. The concept has been debated by historians ever since: some emphasise the genuine intellectual collaboration, while others point out that the relationship was often unequal and that non-Muslims lived as protected subjects (dhimmis) rather than as full citizens.
