About Cernobbio & Villa d'Este
Villa d'Este at Cernobbio is Italy's most famous luxury hotel, a 16th-century Renaissance palace set in eighteen hectares of formal gardens on the lake's edge, historically host to European royalty, the annual Ambrosetti Forum of business and political leaders, and the finest clientele in the world.
Villa d'Este at Cernobbio, just south of the city of Como, is one of the most celebrated luxury hotels in the world and one of the most historically significant buildings on the lake. The Renaissance palace was built in 1568 for Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, passed through the hands of various noble owners, and in 1815 briefly became the residence of Caroline of Brunswick, Princess of Wales and estranged wife of the future King George IV of England. After several more changes of ownership, the villa was converted to a hotel in 1873 and has operated as such ever since. The hotel occupies eighteen hectares of formal Italian gardens extending from the lakefront up the hillside behind, arranged in terraces with fountains, statues, and a remarkable baroque staircase. The property includes a floating swimming pool moored in the lake, unique among Italian lake hotels. The annual Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, a prestigious vintage automobile concours held on the grounds each May, is considered one of the foremost automotive events in the world.
Did you know? Villa d'Este is the only luxury hotel in Italy with a floating swimming pool, a large pontoon pool moored directly in the lake in front of the villa, a feature that has existed for generations and remains one of the hotel's most distinctive amenities.
