About Como Funicular to Brunate

The Como-Brunate funicular, built in 1894 and climbing 300 metres in just seven minutes, is one of northern Italy's most charming historic transport lines, connecting Como's lakefront to the quiet hilltop village of Brunate with its sweeping views over the entire southern lake.

The Como-Brunate funicular is a short and delightful mountain railway that has been carrying passengers from the lakeside at Como to the hilltop village of Brunate since 1894. The funicular departs from a small station on the Via Colonna, just a short walk from Como's lakefront at Piazza Cavour, and climbs 300 metres through a mix of urban housing and forested hillside in about seven minutes, arriving at the upper terminus in the centre of Brunate village. Brunate is a quiet residential village of around 1,800 inhabitants that sits at 720 metres above sea level on the rim of the mountains immediately above Como. The views from the village and from the hilltop above it, accessible by a walking path of about 20 minutes, encompass the entire southern arm of Lake Como, the city of Como below, the Swiss Alps in the north, and on very clear days the city of Milan in the south. The funicular runs throughout the day at regular intervals and is used by both locals commuting to Como and by tourists. A further 45-minute walk above Brunate leads to the Volta Lighthouse, a lighthouse-shaped monument to the physicist Alessandro Volta who was born in Como.

Did you know? The Como-Brunate funicular has been in continuous operation since 1894, making it one of the longest-running funicular railways in Italy. The original cable mechanism has been modernised but the route, the stations, and the basic engineering of the two-car counterbalanced system remain unchanged from the original.
