About Varenna: Eastern Shore Village
Varenna is a car-free village on the eastern shore of Lake Como, considered by many to be the most authentic and least crowded of the lake's celebrated settlements, with a beautiful lakeside promenade, Villa Monastero, and a short ferry ride to Bellagio.
Varenna is a village of about 800 permanent residents on the eastern shore of Lake Como, roughly opposite Bellagio across the water. Unlike Bellagio, which receives very large numbers of tourists, Varenna retains a quieter, more genuinely Italian atmosphere, partly because it is accessible only by train or boat, there is no road into the village centre, and cars must be left outside. A beautiful lakeside pedestrian walkway, the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of the Lovers), connects the village to the adjacent hamlet of Fiumelatte, running on wooden walkways above the waterline and through a natural tunnel. Villa Monastero, a former Cistercian monastery on the lakefront, maintains exceptional botanical gardens open to visitors. Villa Cipressi, another historic lakefront property, is now a hotel. Varenna connects by regular ferry and triangular car ferry to Bellagio, Menaggio, and Como, and by train on the Lecco line from Milan.
Did you know? Varenna has no road into its village centre, there is no way to drive directly into the village. All visitors arrive by train (then walk or taxi), or by boat. This inconvenience is, paradoxically, what keeps Varenna more peaceful and authentic than its better-known neighbours.
