About Bellagio: Pearl of Lake Como
Bellagio occupies the tip of the promontory dividing Lake Como into its two southern arms, earning its title as the Pearl of the Lake, a supremely photogenic village of steep lanes, flower-draped balconies, and celebrated gardens with views in every direction.
Bellagio stands at the very tip of the Punta Spartivento, literally the 'point that divides the winds', the dramatic promontory that splits the southern end of Lake Como into two branches: the western arm running down toward Como city, and the eastern arm running down toward Lecco. This uniquely central position gives Bellagio views over the widest possible expanse of the lake and the surrounding Alps in every direction, which is the primary reason it has been celebrated as the most beautiful spot on the lake since classical antiquity. The town itself is a pleasant and well-preserved ensemble of colour-washed buildings, steep pedestrian lanes called salite, waterfront promenades, and shaded pergolas draped in bougainvillea and roses. Villa Serbelloni, now managed by the Rockefeller Foundation as a conference centre, crowns the promontory above the town and maintains large, terraced gardens. Villa Melzi at the town's southern edge has a celebrated Japanese garden running along the lakeside. Bellagio is reached by ferry from Como, Varenna, and Menaggio.
Did you know? Bellagio's position at the tip of the Punta Spartivento promontory means it has views simultaneously over the main lake toward the Alps to the north, the western Como arm, and the eastern Lecco arm, more directions than any other town on the lake.
