About Villa Carlotta

Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo is one of Lake Como's most celebrated garden villas, famous for its spectacular spring display of azaleas and rhododendrons, its Canova sculptures, and its extraordinary position above the lake on the western shore.

Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo on the western shore of Lake Como is one of the great garden villas of northern Italy, combining a distinguished neoclassical palace built in the early 18th century with gardens that are considered among the finest in the country. The villa was originally built for the Milanese noble Giorgio Clerici in 1690-1745, passed through the hands of Gian Battista Sommariva, who filled it with important neoclassical sculptures by Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen, and eventually to Princess Charlotte of Prussia, who received it as a wedding gift from her mother in 1847 and gave the villa its current name. The interior contains significant works by Canova, including a copy of his celebrated Cupid and Psyche. The gardens extend over seven hectares and are particularly celebrated for the spring display of approximately 500 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, which reach peak bloom in April and May. A fern ravine, a bamboo grove, a Japanese garden section, and a rock garden complete the horticultural diversity.

Did you know? Villa Carlotta's garden contains approximately 500 varieties of rhododendrons and azaleas, so many that during peak flowering in April-May, the terraced hillside turns into what many visitors describe as one of the most colourful natural spectacles in Europe.
