About Polignano a Mare (Day Trip)
The most photogenic village in Puglia, a medieval town perched on dramatic limestone cliffs above the Adriatic, 35 kilometres south of Bari, birthplace of Domenico Modugno and his famous song Volare.
Polignano a Mare is one of the most visually striking towns in all of Italy, a medieval village built on white limestone cliffs that drop directly into the Adriatic Sea, creating a landscape of extraordinary drama. The old town balances on the cliff edge, with houses cantilevered over the void, and the coves and sea caves below are some of the most beautiful in the Adriatic. The most famous view is of the Lama Monachile cove, a deep narrow inlet flanked by white cliffs, and the old Roman bridge that crosses it. Polignano is the birthplace of singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno, who in 1958 won the Sanremo Festival with 'Nel Blu Dipinto di Blu', better known as 'Volare', which became one of the most recorded songs in history. The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series takes place here annually.
Did you know? 'Volare' by Polignano-born Domenico Modugno (1958) was the first non-English-language song to win the Grammy for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and has been recorded by over 800 artists worldwide.
