About Bari: Gateway to the East
The historic ferry port connecting Italy to Greece and Albania across the Adriatic, Bari has served as the crossroads between the Latin West and the Byzantine-Balkan East for three thousand years.
Bari's port is the most important passenger and freight ferry terminal in the Adriatic after Venice, connecting Italy with Greece (Patras and Corfu), Albania (Durrës), and Montenegro. Ferries have sailed from Bari to Greece since antiquity, the Via Egnatia, the Roman road that extended from Dyrrachium (Durrës) across the Balkans to Byzantium, made Bari the natural point of embarkation for anyone crossing from the Italian peninsula to the Greek and Byzantine world. Throughout the medieval period, Bari was the departure point for Crusaders sailing to the Holy Land. In modern times, the port has played a dramatic humanitarian role: it was the arrival point for the mass Albanian migration of 1991, when thousands of Albanians crossed the Adriatic seeking refuge after the fall of communism. Today it remains a major gateway for travellers and truck freight connecting Italy to the Balkans and beyond.
Did you know? In August 1991, approximately 20,000 Albanian refugees arrived in Bari by ship following the collapse of the Albanian communist regime, one of the most dramatic mass migration events in post-war European history.
