Puglia's most spectacular Romanesque cathedral, rising directly from the Adriatic Sea on the harbour of Trani, 45 kilometres north of Bari.
The Cathedral of San Nicola Pellegrino in Trani is widely considered the most beautiful Romanesque cathedral in Puglia, and by many accounts the most beautifully situated cathedral in all of Italy. Built between the late eleventh and mid-thirteenth centuries on a platform of rock that juts directly into the harbour of Trani, it rises from the Adriatic Sea itself, its warm golden limestone glowing in the afternoon light. The cathedral is dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, a Greek monk who arrived in Trani in 1094, walked through the streets crying 'Kyrie Eleison', and died there. The building demonstrates the full maturity of the Pugliese Romanesque style: a magnificent three-aisled interior with soaring columns, a richly carved bronze portal, and a crypt that descends to the very rock of the sea floor. Best seen at sunset from the opposite side of the harbour.
