About Teatro Petruzzelli
Italy's fourth largest opera house, opened in 1903 and dramatically rebuilt after a devastating arson fire in 1991, now restored to its full splendour as Bari's premier cultural institution.
The Teatro Petruzzelli is the largest and most prestigious performing arts venue in Puglia and the fourth largest opera house in Italy, after the San Carlo in Naples, La Scala in Milan, and the Fenice in Venice. Built between 1898 and 1903 by the Petruzzelli brothers, it opened with a production of Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots. For nearly ninety years it was the cultural heart of Bari, hosting opera, ballet, concerts, and theatrical productions. On 27 October 1991, an arson fire destroyed the interior almost completely. The cause was never definitively determined. The theatre remained a burned shell for nearly two decades while legal disputes over ownership and reconstruction delayed all work. It finally reopened in October 2009, eighteen years after the fire, with the interior recreated in its original neo-Baroque splendour.
Did you know? The Teatro Petruzzelli is the fourth largest opera house in Italy, after Naples's San Carlo, Milan's La Scala, and Venice's La Fenice, and the largest in the entire south of the country.
