About Piazza del Ferrarese
The elegant seafront square at the edge of the old town, the traditional starting point of the evening passeggiata and the social heart of modern Bari.
Piazza del Ferrarese sits at the seaward edge of Bari Vecchia, where the ancient old city meets the waterfront promenade. Named after the Ferrarese merchants who traded here in the medieval period, the square is today one of the most lively and loved public spaces in the city. In the evening, it becomes the starting point of the classic Barese passeggiata, the ritual evening walk in which the entire population seems to emerge from their homes to stroll, socialise, take an aperitivo, and see and be seen. The square is lined with cafes, wine bars, and gelaterie, and backed by the picturesque facades of the old town. Archaeological excavations have revealed Roman and medieval remains beneath the square, visible through glass panels set into the paving.
Did you know? The Barese passeggiata, the ritual evening walk that begins here, is considered one of the finest surviving examples of this deeply Italian social custom, with entire families taking to the streets together every evening.
