About Bari Cathedral (San Sabino)
The Romanesque cathedral of Bari, built between 1170 and 1292, housing a venerated Byzantine Madonna icon and the finest carved episcopal throne in Puglia.
Bari Cathedral, dedicated to Saint Sabinus, stands just a few streets from the Basilica di San Nicola in the heart of the old city. Built between 1170 and 1292 on the site of an earlier Byzantine church, it is a superb example of Pugliese Romanesque architecture with an elegant and harmonious facade. The interior preserves the magnificent trona, the finest carved episcopal throne in Puglia, dating from the twelfth century, and a crypt full of early-Christian remains. The cathedral's most precious possession is the Byzantine icon of the Madonna Odegitria, a revered copy of a sacred image from Constantinople. Every year, on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May, this icon is carried in a candlelit procession through the ancient streets of Bari Vecchia, a living act of faith that has been repeated in this city for centuries.
Did you know? The trona (episcopal throne) inside the cathedral, carved in the 12th century from a single stone block, is considered the finest bishop's throne in all of Puglia.
