About Basilica di San Nicola

The Basilica di San Nicola is the spiritual heart of Bari and one of the most revered pilgrimage churches in all of Christendom. Built between 1087 and 1197 to house relics of Saint Nicholas brought from Myra in present-day Turkey by Bari sailors, it stands as a masterpiece of Southern Italian Romanesque architecture. The facade is powerful and restrained, flanked by two towers and punctuated by blind arcading, carved capitals, and remarkable portal sculptures. Inside, three naves lead to the raised presbytery, beneath which the crypt holds the tomb of Saint Nicholas, drawing pilgrims from both Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Every year on 9 May, the feast of the Translation of the Relics, celebrated in Bari as the Festa di San Nicola, brings a spectacular procession and boat ceremony to Bari harbour, one of the great religious festivals of southern Italy; the saint's own feast day falls on 6 December.
