About Alberobello & the Trulli (Day Trip)
The UNESCO World Heritage trulli village of Alberobello, 60 kilometres south of Bari, where over 1,000 prehistoric-looking conical stone houses cluster on a hillside in the Valle d'Itria.
Alberobello is one of Italy's most extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a town in the Murge plateau of the Valle d'Itria where the historic centre is entirely composed of trulli: dry-stone corbelled houses with conical grey limestone roofs that are unlike any architecture anywhere else in the world. Over a thousand trulli cluster on the hillside of the Rione Monti district, their whitewashed walls and grey conical caps creating a landscape that seems to belong to another age or another civilisation. By local tradition the trulli were built without mortar so that they could be quickly demolished when royal tax inspectors arrived, and kept to a single storey for the same reason, both devices helping landowners avoid the building taxes levied by the Kingdom of Naples. The Trullo Sovrano is the only two-storey example. The entire historic centre was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
Did you know? The word "trullo" (plural: trulli) derives from the Greek "tholos", meaning a domed or vaulted building, a reminder that the technique of building conical stone roofs without mortar is at least as old as ancient Greece.
