About Philopappos Hill
The pine-covered hill facing the Acropolis hands you the postcard view of the Parthenon for free, plus a Roman prince's marble tomb and a path paved with a vanished city.
Philopappos Hill, known in antiquity as the Hill of the Muses (Mouseion), rises southwest of the Acropolis and is celebrated for its panoramic view of the Parthenon. Its summit is crowned by the Philopappos Monument, a two-storey marble tomb built around AD 114-116 for Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos, a prince of the royal house of Commagene who became a Roman consul and benefactor of Athens. His sister Julia Balbilla and the Athenians raised the tomb, whose facade combined statues of Philopappos and his ancestors with a frieze of him in a consular chariot. Under Ottoman rule, stones stripped from the monument were reused in the minaret added to the Parthenon.
The hill's network of stone paths, terraces and steps was designed by the architect Dimitris Pikionis between 1954 and 1957, assembled partly from marble and tile salvaged from demolished nineteenth-century Athens houses. A rock-cut complex on the slope is traditionally, though unverifiably, called the Prison of Socrates.
Did you know? In antiquity this was the Hill of the Muses, the Mouseion, named for the goddesses of the arts and inspiration. The classic view of the Parthenon has been drawing admirers to this exact spot since long before the camera existed.
