About Pnyx
On this bare hill west of the Acropolis, thousands of Athenian citizens gathered to debate and vote in person, making the Pnyx one of the founding sites of direct democracy.
The Pnyx is a low rocky hill less than a kilometre west of the Acropolis that served as the meeting place of the Athenian ekklesia, the popular assembly of citizens. Adult male citizens gathered here to debate and vote on laws, war, finance and ostracism, making the site one of the founding places of direct democracy. Citizens began assembling on the hill from about 507 BC, after the reforms of Cleisthenes; earlier, the assembly had met in the Agora.
Speakers addressed the crowd from the bema, a platform cut from the living rock that still survives. The hill was reshaped in three main phases, the last around 345-335 BC, which reversed the auditorium's orientation and added a great curved retaining wall. The auditorium held on the order of 6,000 citizens, with later estimates ranging higher, and great orators such as Pericles and Demosthenes spoke from this spot. Remains of a sanctuary of Zeus Agoraios and of Meton's ancient sundial also survive on the hill.
Did you know? For certain votes, such as ostracism, the assembly needed a quorum of 6,000 citizens physically present. That same figure, 6,000, was the number of ballots required to exile a man from Athens for ten years.
