About Acropolis Museum
A glass museum built in the Acropolis's sightline to argue for the Parthenon Marbles' return, floating above an excavated ancient neighbourhood you view through the floor.
The Acropolis Museum is an archaeological museum at the southeast foot of the Acropolis, in the Makrygianni district, housing finds from the Acropolis and its surrounding slopes. Designed by the architect Bernard Tschumi with the Greek architect Michael Photiadis, it opened on 20 June 2009 and replaced the small Old Acropolis Museum that had stood on the rock itself. It exhibits more than 4,250 objects across an area of about 14,000 square metres and stands on pillars above an excavated ancient neighbourhood visible through glass floors.
The top-floor Parthenon Gallery is a glass-walled hall deliberately aligned with the orientation of the Parthenon, ringed by 48 columns set at the temple's spacing so the frieze and metopes appear at their original scale. Glass exterior walls admit natural daylight, and plaster casts stand where the original marbles, held in the British Museum, are missing. A stated purpose of the museum is to strengthen Greece's case for the return of the Parthenon Marbles.
Did you know? The top-floor Parthenon Gallery is turned to the temple's exact orientation and ringed by 48 columns at its real spacing, so the sculpted frieze hangs at full temple scale, in direct sight of the Acropolis itself.
