About Ancient Agora of Athens
The flat open square below the Acropolis where Athenians invented public life, sat on juries, ran their democracy, and exiled each other by scratching names onto broken pottery.
The Ancient Agora was the civic, political, judicial and commercial heart of classical Athens, an open public square lying just northwest of the Acropolis where citizens gathered to trade, govern and socialise. Around it stood the working institutions of Athenian democracy, including the Bouleuterion, the council house of the 500, the round Tholos that housed the presiding prytaneis, and the Monument of the Eponymous Heroes, which doubled as the city's public noticeboard. The Panathenaic Way, the processional road of the Great Panathenaia, ran diagonally across the site toward the Acropolis.
The American School of Classical Studies at Athens has excavated the Agora since 1931, uncovering evidence of more than 5,000 years of habitation. Reaching it required demolishing a dense nineteenth-century neighbourhood built above the ruins. Finds include ostraka, the inscribed potsherds used in votes of ostracism. The eleventh-century Byzantine Church of the Holy Apostles still stands within the site.
Did you know? Ostracism ran on broken pottery: citizens scratched the name of whoever they wanted gone onto a potsherd, and a man with enough votes against him left Athens for ten years.
