About Hadrian's Library

Not just a library but an emperor's walled campus of learning, a hundred marble columns around a garden and pool, with three later churches raised in its court.

Hadrian's Library is a large rectangular cultural complex built by the Roman emperor Hadrian around AD 132, just north of the Roman Agora, as a centre of learning as much as a book store. Laid out on a peristyle plan about 122 by 82 metres, it was larger than the neighbouring Roman Agora. Its single west entrance was a monumental propylon with columns of green Karystian marble, and the interior enclosed a colonnaded courtyard with a decorative pool and garden at its centre.

The traveller Pausanias described a hundred columns of Phrygian marble, painted ceilings, alabaster walls and statue-filled niches. The papyrus book-rolls were shelved in rooms on the east side, with adjoining reading halls and corner lecture rooms. The library was badly damaged in the Herulian invasion of AD 267 and repaired in the early fifth century, and three churches were later built in turn within its courtyard, in the fifth, seventh and twelfth centuries.

Did you know? A visiting Greek writer, Pausanias, left a description of the interior: a hundred columns of Phrygian marble, painted ceilings, walls faced with alabaster, and statues set in niches around the reading court.
