About Annecy

Annecy sits at the northern tip of a startlingly clear alpine lake, with mountains rising straight from the water. A little river, the Thiou, runs out of the lake and threads through the old town in a set of narrow canals, which is why Annecy is often called the 'Venice of the Alps'. It is small, walkable and, in summer, extremely popular.

The old town is the heart of it. Pastel houses with arcaded ground floors line the canals, flowers spill from the bridges, and in the middle of the Thiou stands the Palais de l'Île, a little triangular building that has been a lord's house, a courthouse, a mint and a prison, and is now a museum. Above the roofs, the Château d'Annecy watches from its hill.

Annecy was once the seat of the Counts of Geneva, and later a stronghold of Catholic reform: Saint Francis de Sales was its bishop, and the hillside Basilica of the Visitation holds his tomb. For centuries the lake was ordinary water. Then, in the 1960s, the towns around it built a pioneering system to stop sewage flowing in, and it became one of the cleanest lakes in Europe.

That lake is the other half of the visit. You can swim from grassy shores, hire a boat, or follow a flat cycle path along the water. Cross the Pont des Amours, climb Le Semnoz for the view down over the whole basin, and take the lakeside road to the castle of Menthon-Saint-Bernard and the quiet village of Talloires. The nearby Gorges du Fier adds a cool, shadowy walk.

None of this needs rushing. Wander the canals in the morning before the crowds, eat by the water, and leave the afternoon for the lake or the mountains. Bring something to swim in from late spring onward. Then pick a bridge, lean on the rail for a moment, and start exploring.

Three things most visitors miss

Palais de l'Île

The island commanded the only crossing over the Thiou, along with its toll, so whoever controlled the Palais de l'Île effectively controlled who came and went through medieval Annecy and its markets.

Château d'Annecy

The Tour de la Reine, or Queen's Tower, is the castle's oldest surviving part, dating to the 12th century, and its walls measure more than four metres thick, built to withstand a serious siege.

Vieille Ville (Old Town)

Rue Sainte-Claire is lined with stone arcades, covered galleries on columns that let you browse the shops and cafés below in the shade or the rain, exactly as medieval builders intended.
