About Château d'Annecy

A hilltop castle of grey stone that once housed the Counts of Geneva and the dukes of Genevois-Nemours, later a barracks, and now Annecy's municipal Musée-Château.

The Château d'Annecy stands on a rocky spur above the old town, a complex of towers and ranges built between the 12th and 16th centuries. It served as the residence of the Counts of Geneva and later the dukes of Genevois-Nemours. The oldest surviving part is the 12th-century Tour de la Reine, whose walls are more than four metres thick.

Damaged by fire and abandoned in the 17th century, it was later repaired and used as a military barracks until 1947. The town of Annecy acquired it in 1953, restored it with the Monuments historiques and installed a museum; it has been listed as a monument historique since 1959. It now operates as the municipal Musée-Château, and since 1993 the Perrière tower has housed the Observatoire régional des lacs alpins, the regional observatory of alpine lakes, so its collections now range from regional history and art to the ecology of the lakes.

Did you know? The Tour de la Reine, or Queen's Tower, is the castle's oldest surviving part, dating to the 12th century, and its walls measure more than four metres thick, built to withstand a serious siege.
