About Palais de l'Île
An island building marooned in the river Thiou, this triangular stone landmark has served as a mint, a courthouse and a prison, and now holds Annecy's local-history museum.
The Palais de l'Île is a former fortified house set on a natural island in the river Thiou, at the centre of Annecy's old town. Its origins date to the 12th century, when it commanded the only crossing over the river and the toll levied there. The triangular building narrows to a point mid-current, so it appears moored like a stone boat, bordered by houses on each bank.
Across the centuries it filled many roles: seigneurial residence, mint after Count Amédée III gained the right to strike coinage in 1356, courthouse and prison under the dukes of Genevois-Nemours, barracks, and an almshouse for the elderly from 1864 to 1888. It served as a prison until the French Revolution and again during the Second World War. Classified as a monument historique in 1900, it now houses the Centre d'Interprétation de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine, the local-history museum.
Did you know? The island commanded the only crossing over the Thiou, along with its toll, so whoever controlled the Palais de l'Île effectively controlled who came and went through medieval Annecy and its markets.
