About Talloires
A quiet village on Lake Annecy's eastern shore, home to a former Benedictine abbey, now a hotel, where Cézanne is said to have painted the lake in 1896.
Talloires is a lakeside village on the eastern shore of Lake Annecy in Haute-Savoie. It stayed a separate commune until 2016, when it merged into Talloires-Montmin. A Benedictine abbey was established here in the early 11th century, after Rudolph III of Burgundy donated the Talloires domain to monks of Savigny; sources give the founding as 1016 or the donation as 1018. Its present buildings date from 1681 onward, and the former abbey now operates as a hotel and conference centre.
Tufts University maintains its European Center in an 11th-century former priory in the village, purchased in 1958 and given to the university in 1978. Talloires also has literary and scientific ties: the chemist Claude Louis Berthollet was born here around 1748, and Paul Cézanne is said to have painted the lake during a stay at the abbey in 1896. His resulting oil, 'Le Lac d'Annecy', is now held by the Courtauld Gallery in London.
Did you know? Paul Cézanne is said to have stayed about six weeks at the Talloires abbey in the summer of 1896, painting three oils and roughly twenty-one watercolours of the lake and its surroundings.
