Rote Fabrik, Red Factory, is one of Zurich's most beloved cultural institutions, occupying a striking 19th-century red-brick industrial building on the southern lakeshore, about 3 kilometres south of the city centre. Built as a textile factory in 1891, the building was converted into a cultural centre in the 1970s following protest movements that demanded alternative cultural spaces in Zurich. Today it hosts an eclectic year-round programme of concerts (jazz, world music, electronic, rock), theatre productions, dance performances, art exhibitions, and one of Zurich's most enjoyable outdoor cinemas in summer. The lakeside setting is exceptional, a waterfront terrace and outdoor stage make warm-weather events here particularly memorable. The atmosphere is deliberately informal and unpretentious, attracting a mixed creative crowd of all ages. The adjacent Seebad Enge is a popular open-air swimming bath. The Rote Fabrik represents the alternative, progressive cultural tradition of Zurich that runs as a counter-current to the city's banking image, a reminder that Zurich has always had a strong bohemian and artistic soul.
